Review of Weirder Than Marshmallows – Tiffany D.

Weirder Than Marshmallows is a collection of essays and observations based on the author’s life. Dan Fogg discusses everything from the stupid side of human nature to the very serious Columbine shooting.

What I liked most about this book is that it didn’t really feel like I was reading. It was more like Dan was sitting next to me and we were having a conversation about life and all the ridiculous things we come across. I loved that he brought up a lot of topics that I have thought about before and have even complained about. It took me only a little over an hour to finish although it felt like I breezed through it in minutes.

Since this is such a short book, it felt more like reading a magazine article or even a blog post. I think because I read this in e-format and online, it added to that feeling. I may have felt differently had I been reading a print version.

Even though I enjoyed the book, I did find a few topics repeating themselves. A topic would be discussed in the first part of the book, only to pop back up again later on to repeat the same observation. Perhaps if they were combined and edited, it would have made for a more engaging section. As it was, most chapters were only a page long. I really enjoyed the chapter about his father’s lack of common sense and found myself disappointed that it was so short.

Overall, I liked what I read. I’d recommend this to anyone who was looking for something quick and fun to read without having to invest too much time. I was very sad to see that Dan Fogg passed away before this was published. One can only wonder where he could have taken his writing had he had more time. However, I was happy to see that he has some fiction work that may eventually be published. I will definitely be looking forward to it.

Books that make fun of the inherent behaviors of human beings are popular for more reasons than one. Stand up comedians have been making a living for years making fun of themselves and others. It’s just one of those things, we do silly, sometimes stupid things and they just insist that you laugh at yourself lest you will be crying. Weirder Than Marshmallows is just one such book.

Nightfire Publications released this awesome book for the Kindle and honestly, you need nothing but time and a place to rest for some serious belly laughs. They say laughter is the best medicine and seriously, laughing at other people is a lot of fun, even if you won’t admit you partake of such fun. And, the sad thing is, you may find a story in the book that leaves you wondering if someone was spying on you. It really is that real. Again, leave room for lots of belly laughs.

Just as a side note, I don’t recommend reading this and trying to retell the stories as you read because the people listening (mainly my spouse) won’t be amused by all the laughing and moreover the laughing to the point of not being able to finish reading the story to him so he can laugh too. OOPS! OH Well, life’s tough that way.

I was recently sent “Weirder Than Marshmallows” to read and review.
I have to say this is a very funny and amusing book written by Dan Fogg.
It showcases some of the stupid things people say and do today in a very humorous and insightful way. You will get a kick out of knowing you are not the only one who ever said something dumb then wished they could take it back.
He very eloquently puts into words what we all think everyday when we hear or see a random act of dumb, but we don’t say out loud.

How many times have you thought to your self “wow, that person has no common sense?” Dan Fogg just puts those thoughts into words.

In this book he also covers stupid technology and even paranormal tales.
Every story in his book actually happened to a live human being. Maybe that is what makes it so interesting to read.

I have been reading a lot lately I don’t want to give you examples because I want you to read this. Dan has some great thoughts, observations, and discussions that you should read. I guarantee you that you will have conversation points as well from this book.

I decided to read and write my review before checking out what other people had to say about the book. Turns out we are almost always in a clear consensus: This book has great stories & has good flow, excellent writing. I recommend it.

I am honestly heartbroken to become a fan of Dan Fogg’s work knowing that he has passed. I look forward to other publications of his work, but based on his style of writing and frank honesty, I would have easily been a lifelong fan, anticipating his continuous work.

This book is a great read, it is humorous, insightful and the book says what we are all thinking at some time or another but don’t actually want to say it out loud! It is a fun read and I recommend it to anyone that is looking to relax and read a book that isn’t complicated to read! I am a fan of books that are easy to read because most of the time I am reading when my crazy boys are making a lot of noise, which was the case with this one as well but it was fun and I was able to read through it without any issues understanding it.

I have to say that I am sad that the writer passed so suddenly and that it is nice that his mother has released some of his work. The story behind the book is also included in the book at different areas throughout and I appreciated the inside look at what Daniel’s life was like, who he was, and what happened to him. It makes the book more personable, I think.

Overall, a great read!

The products keep piling up, here at The Daily Serge, so expect a lot of reviews in the next few days! Today’s is another book entitled Weirder than Marshmallows. As a compilation of short stories, Weirder than Marshmallows brings light the observations of Dan Fogg, who passed away in 2002 at 22 years old. What I enjoyed about reading these stories is that he speaks of the everyday truths we see all day. Heck, the first few chapters are about the idiocy of signs like ‘Do Not Park On Railroad Tracks’ or ‘Harmful if Swallowed’ while referring to gasoline…

There is pretty good humor sprinkled in, too. You wouldn’t feel like you’re reading a book, but rather listening to a friend while at Happy Hour after work. Each story is only a few paragraphs long, so he gets to the point, hits you with some humor, and leaves it open for your response…if this guy was at a party, everyone would want to sit near him to hear what he has to say next.

All around, I really enjoyed reading this. It is just long enough to be worth the read, but short enough so you’re never let down. It is like Seinfeld: Finishes on top….and not like The Office, which reuses ideas and should have ended four seasons ago……

Therefore, I feel compelled to give Weirder than Marshmallows 5 out of 5 Thumbs Up!

I was given the opportunity to review the book “Weirder than Marshmallows” by Dan Fogg. This book had me laughing outloud! I’m a huge fan of sarcasm and Dan’s writing style 100% fits the bill!!

It even had Eli my 18 month old grandson laughing… Nonnie can make any book sound like Dr. Seuss! When I laughed, Eli would laugh and clap. Course… you really can’t judge any book by Eli’s laughing… he thought the electric bill was hilarious!

I was in love as soon as I read the introduction of Weirder than Marshmallows: “Ignorance, lack of common sense, and downright inhuman stupidity run rampant in this country and around the world. I watch people, and I hear stories, and they beg, beg, beg to be mocked and ridiculed”.

I applaud Dan Fogg’s mom Deborah Carney, for compiling this truly enjoyable book and getting it published after Dan passed away. Dan’s writings need to be read.

This book is a fun, sometimes sad, quick read. The book is a series of “5 musings” that will make you go “DUH”

Please go check it out you will need this book the next time you want to use lighter fluid. (Dan woulda liked me…. I’m funny!!)

Dan Fogg is a great writer. It’s a great loss to us that he passed away in 2002, but his amazing Mother has given us the ability to read his words and see the person that he was. Weirder Than Marshmallows takes to heart all the things you wish you could say, but never do. The stories are at times raw and amusing, but the fact that they make you feel is the sign of a good book, plus I love his categories. The Title of the book and the title of these Categories are incredibly humorous.

“Writers write.” It’s a two-word creed spoken by journalists and novelists and screenwriters alike, spoken from all around the world. Writers write, it’s what they do.Not because they want to, though I imagine most of them do. Not because they like to, though I can’t see why they wouldn’t. Writers write because they have to. Writers write because they have no choice.”

There is such a deep sense of honesty in Dan Fogg. Although most of his essays are written to amuse, you can see behind them into the person he must have been. A profound thinker that saw the world realistically and sometimes in ways we want to deny to ourselves that it is; or as an Observer which seems to be what he would have titled it. Weirder Than Marshmallows explores these situations, stupidities and sometimes hard truths in a light hearted manner I think you’ll really enjoy.

For anyone that has a sense of humor, or likes a good laugh every now and then…this book is for you! I absolutely funny situations/stories and this book truly made me laugh out loud on several occasions. A short, but funny book that truly tells it like it is. Some of the short stories even had me picturing the author as a stand up comedian 😀

Humor aside, the author also does a great job of sharing what life with a disability is like. Dan Fogg was in a wheelchair and he knew first hand what it was like to live with disability for most of his life. And he also made a great point, by stating that we all want to be treated like equals – and you know what, everyone deserves it too. It is so sad that this young man died at such a young age, due to a car accident.

I would highly recommend this book to ages young adult and up. Its funny, corky and sometimes downright witty.

Review of Weirder Than Marshmallows – Jennee T.

Do you know what I find weirder than marshmallows? The fact that marshmallows is spelled the way it is spelled yet we call them marshmellows. Why is that? Have you ever wondered about the strange things in life? Been in awe of the stupidity of humanity? Been easily amused? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then I have a solution for you.

Weirder Than Marshmallows is a collection of essays and observations by Dan Fogg. The collection was put together by Deborah Carney. Ignorance, lack of common sense, and downright inhuman stupidity run rampant in this country and around the world. I watch people, and I hear stories, and they beg, beg, beg to be mocked and ridiculed. This excerpt and thought really gives the vibe of the essays. The categories covered in the collection start with Weirder than Marshmallows and end somewhere around Weird Stuff. Each categories has little blurbs about something stupid or strange. In Technology Sucks, there is a story about a possessed phone.

I’m sure we have all experienced something similar!

The book is witty and sarcastic. With such fun little blurbs, dare I say that it is excellent bathroom reading! Seriously, this is the kind of book I’d like to find at some strangers house while I visit the lavatory. It’s a short read but just remember that some of these odd observations will come to mind for the rest of your life! I’ve already seen some of the observations and chuckle to myself because Dan’s writing is right on.
