Do you know what I find weirder than marshmallows? The fact that marshmallows is spelled the way it is spelled yet we call them marshmellows. Why is that? Have you ever wondered about the strange things in life? Been in awe of the stupidity of humanity? Been easily amused? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then I have a solution for you.

Weirder Than Marshmallows is a collection of essays and observations by Dan Fogg. The collection was put together by Deborah Carney. Ignorance, lack of common sense, and downright inhuman stupidity run rampant in this country and around the world. I watch people, and I hear stories, and they beg, beg, beg to be mocked and ridiculed. This excerpt and thought really gives the vibe of the essays. The categories covered in the collection start with Weirder than Marshmallows and end somewhere around Weird Stuff. Each categories has little blurbs about something stupid or strange. In Technology Sucks, there is a story about a possessed phone.

I’m sure we have all experienced something similar!

The book is witty and sarcastic. With such fun little blurbs, dare I say that it is excellent bathroom reading! Seriously, this is the kind of book I’d like to find at some strangers house while I visit the lavatory. It’s a short read but just remember that some of these odd observations will come to mind for the rest of your life! I’ve already seen some of the observations and chuckle to myself because Dan’s writing is right on.

For anyone that has a sense of humor, or likes a good laugh every now and then…this book is for you! I absolutely funny situations/stories and this book truly made me laugh out loud on several occasions. A short, but funny book that truly tells it like it is. Some of the short stories even had me picturing the author as a stand up comedian 😀

Humor aside, the author also does a great job of sharing what life with a disability is like. Dan Fogg was in a wheelchair and he knew first hand what it was like to live with disability for most of his life. And he also made a great point, by stating that we all want to be treated like equals – and you know what, everyone deserves it too. It is so sad that this young man died at such a young age, due to a car accident.

I would highly recommend this book to ages young adult and up. Its funny, corky and sometimes downright witty.

Dan Fogg is a great writer. It’s a great loss to us that he passed away in 2002, but his amazing Mother has given us the ability to read his words and see the person that he was. Weirder Than Marshmallows takes to heart all the things you wish you could say, but never do. The stories are at times raw and amusing, but the fact that they make you feel is the sign of a good book, plus I love his categories. The Title of the book and the title of these Categories are incredibly humorous.

“Writers write.” It’s a two-word creed spoken by journalists and novelists and screenwriters alike, spoken from all around the world. Writers write, it’s what they do.Not because they want to, though I imagine most of them do. Not because they like to, though I can’t see why they wouldn’t. Writers write because they have to. Writers write because they have no choice.”

There is such a deep sense of honesty in Dan Fogg. Although most of his essays are written to amuse, you can see behind them into the person he must have been. A profound thinker that saw the world realistically and sometimes in ways we want to deny to ourselves that it is; or as an Observer which seems to be what he would have titled it. Weirder Than Marshmallows explores these situations, stupidities and sometimes hard truths in a light hearted manner I think you’ll really enjoy.

I was given the opportunity to review the book “Weirder than Marshmallows” by Dan Fogg. This book had me laughing outloud! I’m a huge fan of sarcasm and Dan’s writing style 100% fits the bill!!

It even had Eli my 18 month old grandson laughing… Nonnie can make any book sound like Dr. Seuss! When I laughed, Eli would laugh and clap. Course… you really can’t judge any book by Eli’s laughing… he thought the electric bill was hilarious!

I was in love as soon as I read the introduction of Weirder than Marshmallows: “Ignorance, lack of common sense, and downright inhuman stupidity run rampant in this country and around the world. I watch people, and I hear stories, and they beg, beg, beg to be mocked and ridiculed”.

I applaud Dan Fogg’s mom Deborah Carney, for compiling this truly enjoyable book and getting it published after Dan passed away. Dan’s writings need to be read.

This book is a fun, sometimes sad, quick read. The book is a series of “5 musings” that will make you go “DUH”

Recently, I was given the chance to do a eBook review of Weirder Than Marshmallows Book of Essays by Dan Fogg. I really didn’t know what to expect from reading just the title, I guess, something that would be, well, weirder than marshmallows. If that was even possible.

Well, apparently it is.

Parts of the book that were my favorite dealt with the “Don’t Stop On Tracks” signs. Common sense to a lot of us, but people still do it. You know those warnings have been put in place because someone has done it. Kind of like one that I always remember on a hair dryer “don’t use in tub.” You know someone has done it at one time or the other, so people have to intervene and put up signs or put little warnings on, well hairdryers.

Weirder Than Marshmallows is non-fiction and deals with real life occurrences to people. Dan talks about it all and rather bluntly, no one is safe, not even his Dad in this book.

There are times when you’ll be shaking your head at what you are reading and other times you’ll be laughing out loud at some of the things that people do “finkin’ pink.”

I enjoyed it, it was an easy read, but there are parts that are a bit dry, but they balance out and I think that you would enjoy this eBook as well.

Sadly, Dan passed away in 2002 but his Mom is making sure that his stories get out there to us and I thank her for that, and to allow us to read what Dan wrote.

Check it out, you won’t be sorry that you did.

What is weirder than marshmallows? Well according to writer Dan Fogg, there are lots of things weirder than marshmallows. Fogg writes about the little weird things in life in his book Weirder Than Marshmallows. This is a book of short stories designed to make you laugh. And laugh you will…..

You never know how well things come across in a blog without tone and facial expressions. So I wonder how many people have figured out that I am extremely scarstic. Now some people think that scarscam is mean and harmful and to those people I say don’t read Weirder Than Marshmallows.

This book is hilarious! There is no other word that I can use to describe it. My favorite section is Do Not Stop on Tracks. I always read warnings and wonder who on Earth needed that warning? Warning-coffee may be hot. Really? Get out of here! No really get out of here if you’re too stupid to know that coffee isn’t hot. So needless to say, this chapter really spoke to me and my sense of humor.

En Mass is my second favorite sections. I won’t spoil it for you, but you HAVE to read the story about the Green Bay
Packers! I was laughing my little bottom off over that one. It was probablly a little more funny to me since I have the Packer game on in the background while I’m typing.

Being a mother of 3 (4 if you include the husband) comes with many ups and downs. Finding time for yourself is often a hard task. I am adamant about taking a few minutes every couple of nights to read. Reading is great for the soul and provides for an escape from this hectic game we call life.

This past couple of weeks I have been reading “Weirder Than Marshmallows”. No spoilers here, but the name itself is intriguing and once you get through the first couple of chapters, our author Dan Fogg, gives us his off the wall definition of this descriptive title.

“Weirder Than Marshmallows” is a compilation of essays that remind us that sometimes we as a society lack common sense. Dan does a great job of incorporating humor into his writings choosing such titles as “Do Not Stop on Tracks” (duh, who stops on the railroad tracks?) and “En Masse” (show casing stories of mass ignorance).
Comparative to the “Here’s Your Sign” jokes by Bill Engvall or “The Rants” collection by Dennis Miller, “Weirder Than Marshmallows” pushes the envelope on some issues that society seems to tap-dance around. From Columbine to the Bush/Gore election screw up, Fogg taps into the reality that some of us would rather not broach. We even read a few stories about discrimination towards people who suffer from certain handicaps. Beware: Fogg never said some of us won’t be offended.

Besides being a bit offensive to some, there are a couple of spots where the reading is a bit slow. We find out by reading this book though that all of the stories in this compilation are Non-Fiction and that sometimes reality hits close to home.

I enjoyed spending time racking Dan Fogg’s brain and hope that you will too. Be prepared to laugh, be prepared to be speechless, but please DON’T BE AFRAID TO FIND YOUR COMMON SENSE!!!!

Weirder Than Marshmallows is a collection of short essays based on the musings, and humorous observations of the author. He begins the book by stating, “Ignorance, lack of common sense, and downright inhuman stupidity run rampant in this country and around the world. I watch people, and I hear stories, and they beg, beg, beg to be mocked and ridiculed.” I couldn’t agree more. I laughed out loud when I read the section of the book entitled, “En Masse.” It talks about how one person after another can repeat the same mistake, such as a spelling error.
When I think of this book, I think of one word – irreverent. Dan Fogg uses his unique sense of humor to poke fun at the things that some ignore, and others are appauled by. He sees things as they are, in a tell-it-like-it-is approach, and he doesn’t hold back! He points out the hilariousness of many situations, in which others might take offense. Dan Fogg lived his life to the fullest by seeing the humor in life’s every day situations.

Aside from the humor in this book, the author has an important message about people with disabilities. He shares his experiences as a disabled person. He did not want to be set apart from the crowd because of his disability. When we treat people differently, whether in a positive or negative way, we are pointing out their differences. It is important that we treat each other as equals in every situation.

I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read. I read the book in about an hour. When I read it, I was an idiot and didn’t read the introduction that said this author had passed away. At the end, I was sobbing like crazy because I knew there probably were not going to be any more books published by this young author. I am glad that I was lucky enough to have read his work because it reminded me that just because a person may be physically disabled, they may not be mentally. Theya re just like everyone else.

This book would be a great present for anyone, including yourself! Add it to your wishlist, or purchase it now.

First of all I wanted to say that I was dying to read this book. It sounded right up my alley. Although it turned out to not be as in depth as I had thought, it was a fun read. It’s like talking to a good friend on the phone and pondering the crazy things that happen to all of us in life everyday. It’s a quick and easy read guaranteed to give you a good laugh. There is not one story here that almost anyone couldn’t relate to on some level. My favorites are: Do Not Stop On the Tracks and Writers Write. I may not find marshmallows weird, but then again, maybe I just never really thought about them all that much. I usually just eat them. Dan Fogg, on the other hand, has thought about them and finds them to be weird. He explains why in “Weirder Than Marshmallows” which is a collection of his essays.

The book, however, is not about Marshmallows. It is about things that Dan finds even weirder than marshmallows.

He divides the stories in to 5 categories:
DO NOT STOP ON TRACKS – showcasing warnings that should never have to be warned. (You know you have seen these signs and pointed them out to your friends and had a good laugh about them!)
EN MASSE – contains stories of mass ignorance.
TECHNOLOGY SUCKS explores the hazards of the technological age. (Dan comments that you need a degree in order to use some technology. I was about to protest this and then I realized I have an engineering degree so I guess that’s why technology works for me – most of the time, anyway)
THAT’S JUST FREAKY features Twilight Zone like tales of paranormality. (Those things that just can’t be explained any other way!)
WEIRD STUFF is stuff that is well, weird.

This book is a quick read and pretty amusing. I’d definitely give it 4.5 – 5 stars. After the 5 sections mentioned above, there are some musings about life and things in general that are tacked on to the end of the book. Almost every essay I was able to relate to in some way – most of them because they were rants that I have made to friends and family and coworkers in the past. (Especially loose vs lose!)
